On 16 January 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission issued the world’s first scientific targets for a healthy diet that places food production within planetary boundaries.Driven by growing population numbers – by 2050, the population is expected to reach 10 billion – the researchers sought to rethink current diets in a way that would intensify future food production within the planetary limits

The Commission quantitively describes a universal healthy reference diet, based on an increase in consumption of healthy foods (such as vegetables The EAT-Lancet Commission’s scientific targets for healthy diets allow for individuals to prepare and consume meals in the total amount, composition and proportions that fit within the ranges of different food groups. The dietary pattern allows for flexible application of these criteria with room to tailor foods and amounts to the different preferences and contexts to reduce the risk of poor diets and environmental degradation.
